Girl Scouts Build Walking Tour App for Museum

Hoboken Historical Museum to Host Reception for Local Girl Scouts’ Silver Award Projects, “Girls Changing the Community,” on Friday, Nov. 17, 7 – 8 pm

Talented scouts from Troop #12041 created a walking tour app for the Hoboken Museum, helped merchants improve handicap accessibility and hosted workshops to help overcome bullying

The whole community is invited to join the Hoboken Historical Museum on Friday, Nov. 17, at 7 pm, at a reception to recognize the talent and dedication of local Girl Scouts who have completed their Silver Award projects. Girl Scouts work in small groups over the course of several months to plan, complete and report on the results of a community-oriented project to earn their Silver Awards. Three Silver Award project teams will present their projects at the reception, and other teams will bring displays explaining their projects currently in progress.

For the Hoboken Museum, Ally, Celia and Greta worked with a walking tour app framework to customize the content and create five separate “Discover Hoboken” walks: Places of Interest, Landmarks and Monuments, Houses of Worship, Hoboken Parks, and Hoboken Eats. Their fellow Scouts Trinity and Olivia worked on a program to help local restaurants and shop owners make their facilities more accessible to people with handicaps, and Annabel, Isabella, Sophie and Zoe worked with the True Mentors organization to create some resources to help prevent and overcome bullying.

“The Hoboken Museum is grateful for and deeply impressed with the talent and dedication of the Scouts who created the ‘Discover Hoboken Walks’ app,” says Museum Director Bob Foster. “The app is an extremely useful guide to help visitors and even long-time Hoboken residents get to know the community — its history and present.”– Melissa Abernathy, Communications & Volunteers
