Lecture Series: NJ Women Make History, #6 – Anne Ryan, Her Art and Life
November 16, 2020 @ 12:00 am
The sixth talk in the Hoboken Historical Museum’s #NJWomenMakeHistory series will take place Sunday, Nov. 22, at 4 pm, featuring artist and art historian Nancy Nikkal talking about Hoboken-born artist Anne Ryan, a genre-defining artist in the field of collage. (details and registration link below)
#NJWomenMakeHistory is an eight-part lecture series focusing on New Jersey women who made their mark on history, as part of New Jersey’s celebration of the centennial of women’s right to vote. From groundbreaking photographer Dorothea Lange, to gender barrier-breaking baseball player Maria Pepe, both Hoboken natives, the series covers women who made history in a variety of spheres, including politics, finance, philanthropy, art, poetry and sports.
Guest speakers include distinguished authors and scholars, as well as the live participation of New Jersey women poets, and an in-person interview with Hoboken’s own Maria Pepe. The lecture series will be streamed online, with some lectures offering limited in-person seating at the Hoboken Museum, 1301 Hudson Street.
To attend in person, face masks, hand hygiene and social distance guidelines will be observed. All talks are free to attend, thanks to a generous grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. Reservations are required for in-person and online participation. Visit https://bit.ly/NJWomenMakeHistory to reserve a spot.
On Sunday, Nov. 22, at 4 pm, Nancy Nikkal will speak about Hoboken-born artist and pioneer in modern collage art, Anne Ryan (1889-1954). Ryan was born in Hoboken at 227 Garden Street and lived there till she was 14 years old, when she left to attend the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, NJ. After marriage and motherhood Ryan pursued writing prose and poetry. Once her children were grown, Ryan moved to Greenwich Village and began to associate with other writers and artists. She began to paint in 1938 and had her first show in 1941. She studied printmaking in Paris and found her true voice in collage.
Nancy Nikkal is a contemporary artist and art teacher specializing in collage. Her studio is located at Media Loft in New Rochelle, NY, an historic converted factory in Westchester County just north of NYC. She is an avid visitor to museum and gallery exhibitions, keeping up to date and engaged in contemporary art. She has 30+ years’ experience teaching collage.
