All are invited to the opening reception for the new Upper Gallery exhibition, “The Sidewalk Is the Studio: Recent Paintings by Frank Hanavan,” on Sunday, Nov. 14, from 2 – 5 pm. 

One of the most popular painters of Hoboken scenes, Frank Hanavan has many collectors and fans in Hoboken and New York. His most recent work represents many familiar scenes — daily life on the sidewalks of Hoboken — but with a new looseness in his brushstroke. His most recent Hoboken Museum exhibit, in 2017, featured a foray into working with watercolors. The artist says that the techniques he learned while painting in watercolor have transformed his style, now that he’s returned to acrylics.

The show in the Museum’s Upper Gallery features paintings created during the past year, mostly painted on site. Visitors can see for themselves how his style has changed at the opening reception for his latest exhibit of about 17 recent paintings. The artist will be present at the reception in the Upper Gallery from 2 – 5 pm. Masks and social distancing are strongly recommended, and capacity will be limited.
