We all know Mario Albunia as the owner of Mario’s Classic Pizza. He runs the restaurant with his sons Mario, Michael and Joseph. The atmosphere is warm and inviting – drawing preteens, Moms with young children, and day workers alike. The family and staff welcome everyone with a hot slice of pizza and a Blue Moon on tap for $2. And did we mention the homemade sangria?

There is so much to learn about Mario’s story. For starters, Mario immigrated from Santa Maria di Castellabate, Italy in March of 1967. His family, which includes his parents, six sisters, and brother, all settled in Jersey City.

He started Mario’s in January of 1986 on the southeast corner of Garden and 8th, at the current Mr. Wrap’s location. His restaurant is now directly across the street, but the shop has had a presence in Hoboken for nearly 40 years. One of Mario’s most treasured traditions is providing a free meal open to all on Thanksgiving.
