Hoboken Talks with “Hoboken Mary” interviewed by Stuart Chirichella
December 7, 2023 @ 12:00 am
Please join us on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 7pm when Mary DeGaeta, otherwise known as “Hoboken Mary,” sits down with Stuart Chirichella for a special interview on Hoboken Talks.
Mary DeGaeta was born and raised in the Bronx, but she is known to our community as “Hoboken Mary.” She embraced this moniker when she married the love of her life, Billy the Milkman, who delivered milk all throughout Hoboken for 25 years. Billy and Mary have two wonderful children, Paulette and Blair, who grew up in Hoboken, and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and Hoboken High School.
Mary has lived in Clock Towers for 47 years and is an important part of Hoboken’s fabric. She worked for New Jersey Transit for 33 years. She was the President of the Rosary Society at St. Francis Church. She volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital for numerous years overseeing their gift shop. She currently serves on the Executive Board for St. Mary Advocates. She even received special recognition in 2022 by being selected as the Senior Citizen of the Year for all of Hudson County.
Laughter is an important part of Mary’s life. She maintains two cabinets full of 1,000 jokes printed out and categorized in folders. She spent three years serving as a special correspondent for Joe Piscopo’s radio show Ramsey Mazda Sunday Nights with Sinatra, where she displayed her quick wit. Every Sunday night at 7pm, Mary called into the show and gave a special report about Hoboken and to shoot the breeze with Joe. Her knack for storytelling always shone through.
She’ll have many stories to share with us, including how she started knitting bears and writing poems! Please tune in on December 14th to hear more from Hoboken Mary.
