Object/Artifact
Phoenix Wyteface non-metallic 30 meter woven tape, model N7435M, made by Keuffel & Esser Company, New York & Hoboken, N.J., issued circa 1957-1965. Woven synthetic cloth, 30.1 meters long (98' - 9") x 5/8" wide, Wyteface (brand name) finish (black and red markings on white background); metal ring end; steel case, 5/3/4" diameter, covered in gray leather-grained plastic ("Plastide"); manufacturer's plate plus chrome fittings including folding crank.
The maker's plate indicates size as "30m" but otherwise it does not have a model number on it. Since product model number does not appear on item, it was determined from catalogues. As this tape has meters (by meters, decimeters, centimeters) on one side and feet (by feet, inches, 1/4 inched; overall 98 feet, 9 inches) on the other, it corresponds to the model number above. Catalogue states measurements begin from outside end of ring.
The tape also features reinforcement at the line end with a circa 6-1/2" long section that has a backing of green rubber called Flexi-Foam and labeled "Non-Metallic."
The metal clip at the line end securing the ring has 5 patent numbers stamped on it. The last, 2,809,142, is in slightly larger letters than all the others and suggests it was later addition to a standard die. It was issued October 1957 (applied for in 1949) and so it probably dates this item as from circa 1957 and later.
K&E main offices and factory were in Hoboken during the period when this item was manufactured.
