"No other city of its size is so well known by name, and so little known in fact . . It will be one of the objectives of the Hoboken Historical Museum to gather the facts pertaining to Hoboken, mainly the very interesting historical facts, and to compile, catalog, and disseminate them. Since its incorporation in May, 1986, the Museum has operated exclusively for educational purposes and has attracted worthwhile projects dedicated to serving the City of Hoboken. To date, the Museum has presented exhibits at four outdoor events: the rededication of Church Square Park, the July 4th Gala Celebration, the River City Fair, and the 6th Annual Hoboken Terminal Festival. It has already stimulated interest in the City's history, architecture, and genealogy, by exhibiting and utilizing diverse collections, contemporary as ==== [page 7, Introduction continued] well as historic, and hopes to continue to do so. And, one of its functions is to preserve and assist in the preservation of documents, landmarks, and artifacts, and making them available for research and study. The Hoboken Historical Museum wishes to cooperate with individuals and other organizations with similar interests. Amidst the spectacular development on the mile square drawing board of Hoboken, the Historical Museum can seem a modest project indeed. However, we have great hopes for it, and have chosen to go ahead on a shoestring, so to speak, rather than holding out for a more grandiose plan. This seemed an appropriate course, considering that the growth of the city itself has taken place on an intimate scale, by the block and by the building, a phenomenon reflected in our main opening exhibit, "Hoboken's Changing Scenes." This exhibit, which includes a slide presentation with special effects, compares, primarily, the most densely populated period in Hoboken s history ==== [page 9] (shortly after the turn of the century) to the Hoboken of today. It was assembled with the help of many people, very important among them our local photographers. These and other friends and members of the Museum have volunteered their time, talents and labor, often in the face of impossible deadlines. The entire project has been a labor of love, with all the possibilities for mishap that the term implies. In my opinion, and in the opinions of others who have seen examples of the artifacts and documents of Hoboken's rich history, this Museum project for which we seek public support is a welcome and worthwhile undertaking. We invite all the people of Hoboken and elsewhere to participate in the growth of the Hoboken Historical Museum.
