Notes: Archives 2015.003.0014 ==== [page 2] 1. 2 Constitution Court - Penthouse #11 We are very pleased to start this year's tour with a striking bachelor's penthouse apartment. The owner started with an unfinished unit, and with the assistance of a local designer, has created a warm and welcoming personal retreat. Note the extensive use of customized built-ins throughout the apartment, including the office area, fireplace, wet bar and entertainment unit in the main living and dining areas. (Please be courteous to the residents of the building, and keep hallway noise to a minimum. Thank you!) 2. Hoxie House - Castle Point, Stevens Institute of Technology Hoxie House is the residence of the President of Stevens and was built in 1929 through a donation of Stevens graduate William Dixie Hoxie. This is a special opportunity to view many of the Stevens Family heirlooms and treasures of their world travels. In addition, this home provides one of the best views of the New York skyline in Hoboken. 3. Alexander House - Castle Point, Stevens Institute of Technology Alexander House was a single family residence built in 1884 as a wedding gift for one of the Stevens children. It exhibits classic Georgian architectural proportions and styling - notice the size of the receiving hall and the height of the ceilings throughout. Today you are viewing the ground floor residence of the Dean of Arts and Sciences, renovated only a few years ago. 4. 633 Court Street - Carriage House This Carriage House residence, built circa 1880, has been recently renovated by a NYC designer who is using it to showcase many of his classic decorating ideas. It features dramatic use of color and texture to create a warm inviting atmosphere. The East side exterior of the carriage house (visible from 7th Street) was re-furbished two years ago to fully restore the original slate mansard roof. 5. 630 Bloomfield Street We are very fortunate that the generous owners (and long-time museum-supporters) agreed to open their home for this year's tour. The ground floor features a state-of-the-art kitchen and a formal dining room, which then opens to a patio and landscaped backyard. The parlor floor features a formal sitting room, as well as a newly-created guest room, reminiscent of a sleeping cabin on a luxury ship. The upper floors contain still more living and lounging areas - be sure to check out Madeline's portrait in the hallway! ==== [page 3] 6. 729 Park Avenue This is a lovely example of a brick row house, similar to the many that you see throughout Hoboken, that has been extensively updated and renovated to create an oasis for a busy working couple. The wordwork has been stripped throughout the house to reveal original finishes and detailing - and built-ins added to the front parlor to create an elegant sitting room. Be sure to notice the fabulous designer bathrooms! 7. 402 9th Street - #5F - The Columbus (Enter the courtyard from 9th St.; it is the building on your right.) The owners of this apartment have created a sophisticated urban living space by utilizing antiques from their former Hoboken brownstone, and combining them with modern pieces for a touch of whimsy. The neutral wall colors, fabric choices and window treatments create a stunning backdrop to the owner's art collection, including historical photographs and impressionistic paintings by a family member. Check out the fabulous view of Columbus Park from the balcony! (Please be courteous to the residents of the building, and keep hallway noise to a minimum. Thank you!) 8. 911 Bloomfield Street The owners of this brick row house moved in almost two years ago - and have been busy renovating and decorating ever since! They have filled their home with large East Coast antiques, including Victorian and Eastlake pieces. Note the etched glass doors that lead to the blue sitting room on the second floor. The home retains the original 'split room' at the back of the house on the top floor, which the owners have made in to two comfortable guest rooms. 9. 1127 Bloomfield Street This large, three-story, single family residence is also the home to noted artist Bill Heard. The home features warm and eclectic furnishings that provide a wonderful setting for Bill's powerful paintings. A recent kitchen renovation enclosed a former porch to create an intimate dining area with a beautiful cove ceiling. On the top floor, there is a special opportunity to see Bill's latest painting, "Carnivore" in progress. Hope you enjoyed this year's tour - be sure to stop back at the Museum and check out the Silent Auction! ==== [page 4] [map keyed to sites] * Hoboken Historical Museum 1. 2 Constitution Court - PH #11 2.
