Program: Gayety Theatre, Washington St. between 10th and 11 Streets, Hoboken, January 17, 1909. Sunday Matinee; Benefit to Aid the Italian Sufferers. Printed leaf, 6-1/2" wide x 12-5/8" high. Full text is in notes. The theatre was the former Quartett Club at 1013 to 1019 Washington Street. The text included a short November 13, 1908 article published in The Evening News about the theatre being "Only Two Months Old." This reference establishes its opening as circa early September 1908. ---- The benefit performance was for aid of survivors of a massive earthquake in Messina and Reggio, Calabria, Italy, on December 28, 1908. In the early morning of December 28, 1908 a 30 to 42 seconds long earthquake with a reconstructed magnitude of 6.7-7.2 hit the Italian cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria. The earthquake damaged 90% of the buildings and broken pipes fuelled a firestorm, an aftereffect known from many other earthquakes; however one of the most unusual effects of this earthquake was an 8 meter high tsunami which killed almost 2,000 people. The earthquake killed estimated 40,000 people in the two cities alone, 27,000 people along the shores of the Strait of Messina - some historic documents claim 100,000 to 200,000 victims – one of the deadliest natural disasters recorded during historic times in Europe. ==== Theaters Ethnic Culture Entertainment Charity Disasters

This is extremely gratifying to the management owing to the fact that the additional attendance is not the outcome of artificial advertising methods, but is due solely to the merits of the shows presented. The figures prove that the Gayety as an amusement resort has entrenched itself solidly in the esteem of the fair sex as a most agreeable place to spend an afternoon. Ten cents will secure a seat at the Gayety matinees.
