Notes: December 27, 2000 Hoboken Historical Museum P.O. Box 707 Hoboken, NJ 07030 I would like to submit the enclosed photographs in reference to “City Play”. The “Radigan/Rattigan” family has a long history with the city of Hoboken. My great-grandfather James Rattigan immigrated from Co. Mayo, Ireland in June 1880 and settled in Hoboken. He worked as a county park keeper. He married Anna Barrett and they had 7 children: John (my grandfather), Mary, James, Patrick, Joseph, Frank & Annie. When John was born the name was misspelled as “Radigan”. During my research I discovered that both spellings were used on various documents. Patrick “Parky” owned the Terrace Tavern, which was located on the corner of Clinton and 7th. Portofino’s Restaurant is there now. Parky had one of the first televisions in Hoboken. On Saturday mornings he would open up the bar and let the children come in to watch cartoons. John married Jessie Dugan. My father was James (1919-1989). Jim was Building Manager at Our Lady of Grace from 1938 - 1963. He was responsible for the care of the church, school, rectory, orphanage and convent. When they filmed “On the Waterfront”, Jim opened the church doors in one scene and was a member of the crowd in another. Jim served in the Army from 1942-1945 in General Patton’s Third Army/10th Armored Division. He fought in the Battle of Bastone. As a Sargent he issued supplies, gasoline and ammunition during combat. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. My mother kept a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, which tracked the activities of the 10th Armored Div. throughout the war. My father was involved in many activities as depicted in the enclosed • The 10th Street “Rangers” baseball team, circa. 1935. Jim is in top row, 3rd from right. • OLG Drum Corp. circa. 1936/38 • OLG basketball teams 1938-1941 • Lenapi Lancers (OLG Senior Drum Corp.) Oct. 1951 My dad was involved with the Drum Corps, prior to WWII and again when he returned in 1946 through the 1950’s. I have also enclosed several miscellaneous parade photos circa. 1941. If you have any questions I can be reached at 973-340-8660 or by e-mail jradiganec@aol.com photos.
