Mold, cake: Baker's Coconut lamb cake mold issued by Franklin Baker Co., Phila., n.d., ca. 1922-1923.
Object/Artifact
Lamb-shaped Baker's Coconut cake mold issued by Franklin Baker Co., Philadelphia, PA, no date, circa 1922-1923. Cast aluminum, two piece, with product name on base of both pieces, overall 13" wide x 7-5/8" high x 3-7/8" deep; cake made from it would have been ca. 7-1/4" high x 9-1/2" wide x 3-1/2" deep.
Issued to promote the use of the coconut to decorate the three-dimensional frosted cake as lamb's wool. While not present here, a printed sheet with directions issued with the mold is known to have a 1922 copyright on it. This date is at about two years before the company moved operations to Hoboken. It is held here as an example of marketing done by the company and likely related to a campaign for a holiday, Easter.
Note each half has feet to hold it level while baking. The cake could be baked as two layers (front and back) and assembled or as the molds fit together, possibly as one piece.
The lamb cake relates to company marketing efforts on animal shapes that used coconut as an essential part of the decoration. Over 30 years later, it issued booklets for making "Cut-Up Cakes" and "Animal Cut-Up Cakes" neither of which required such an elaborate mold.
