Two identification cards for Mary H. Markey (Mrs. Frank P. Markey): Headquarters, Port of Embarkation, Hoboken, New Jersey; American Red Cross Canteen Escort. 1918-19.
Plus a worn black leather billfold, 3" w x 4" h (closed) that held both items - the Embarkation Pass in the windowed area which is the reason it has creased lines on two edges.
1. Card for Headquarters Port of Embarkation is a Pass for Mrs. F.P. Markey, American Red Cross. Her picture in the top left corner shows her in the uniform. Her signature runs vertical at the right edge. It is Permanent Pass no. 2543 issued July 30, 1919. Authorizing signature is at bottom right. For security purposes the photo and the portion near it has a 1-7/8" diameter blind embossed seal "War Department Port of Embarkation" The reverse is blank. 2.5" high x 4" wide.
2. Identification card, American Red Cross Form 785: American Red Cross Canteen Escort. Lines for location and date are blank. Two authorizing signatures. The reverse is titled "Identification Card" and is filled in as Mary H. Markey, 716 Bloomfield St., Hoboken, N.J. Lines for height, weight, color of hair and eyes are blank along with the line for "Escort's Signature." It is countersigned by E.M. Ellsworth. 4" wide x 2-11/16" high.
