Photograph album, spiral-wire bound, 16 leaves plus covers, with thirty-two 8" x 10" photographs by William Craig that were mostly taken at the United Dry Dock Company, Fletcher Plant, Hoboken, N.J., no date, ca. 1932-40. The Museum does not own the original. It is present in the Museum's collection as digital scans and reference prints.
Craig originally started working at the yard when it was still A. & W. Fletcher, then stayed on when United Dry Dock became the operator. He continued as a yard supervisor when Bethlehem Steel became the yard's owner in 1938. He photographed vessels and yard activities for all three companies.
Many of the ships were in dry docks, but there are several images of vessels on the open water or in the Hudson River.
This record includes an image of the cover plus thumbnails of the other leaves with all the images identified by leaf collation. The individual full-size images are in the photo catalog, 2002.209.0004 to 2002.209.0035.
The purpose of the album is not known, but the general arrangement and the fact that he signed some leaves indicates it may have been for display perhaps at some camera club program. The pages are highly acidic and brittle. It can be seen that many are stained and/or darkened as a result of the acidity and the rubber cement used to mount most of them. Some light sulphiding is also present.
