Sign: packing/assembly of ship float; Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade; Macy's Parade Studio, Hoboken, n.d., ca. 1990s.
Object/Artifact
Instruction signage for packing and assembly of a sailing (pirate) ship float for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade; Macy's Parade Studio, Hoboken, no date, circa 1990s. Natural plywood, 3/4" x 17-1/2" wide x 18" high; hand-drawn diagram with labeled instructions; clear varnish; bolt hole at top center with bolt; other screw holes.
The Parade Studio was located at 1505 Willow Avenue in Hoboken from 1969-2011.
Plan of ship labeled at top TV and OTV to indicate which side is seen by the television cameras and the side not seen, off-television. Since the ship had a number of tall elements, masts and sails, that could not be left in place for its trip through the Lincoln Tunnel (and the corresponding return) to the staging area on Central Park West, instructions were necessary for the packing, assembly and disassembly. There were outlines showing the names and locations of where the pieces were arranged and stored on the deck plus a sequence to follow.
See objects 2012.009.0011 for a wooden model of this ship with removable parts corresponding to the major elements.
It is likely that this chart was once actually mounted on the float itself to be available for reference; possibly hidden by some material such as fringe or a skirt typically used to hide frames or carriages.
