Ribbon badge with medallion: General Committee, Holland Vehicular Tunnel Celebration 1927.
Object/Artifact
Ribbon badge with medallion: General Committee, Holland Vehicular Tunnel Celebration 1927. Bronze medallion, 1-1/2" diameter; dark blue ribbon with gilt lettering; pin-back gold finished metal frame with acetate window; printed paper insert "General Committee." Overall length 4". Reverse of medal has maker's mark in relief: Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, N.J.
The fabric of the ribbon is in poor condition, but the back is dated as scratched by a previous owner (original one?) with the date of the opening event: Nov 12 1927. An interesting example of how an individual chose to use a keepsake.
Medal depicts the earliest seal of The Port of New York Authority (which was a bi-state agency founded in 1921 and formally renamed The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 1972.)
The ceremonial opening of the Holland Tunnel was on November 12, 1927. The ceremony was held in New York at the tunnel entrance plaza. It first opened to general traffic at midnight of November 13, 1927.
While the event was indirectly related to Hoboken, the tunnel was a significant change to the community in its effect on rail commuting and businesses. It has not been established who owned this badge.
