Sign: End of Christopher Street Ferry Service on March 30, 1955, Lackawanna Railroad, posted March 29, 1955.
Printed in red white card stock, 11" x 14" high.
The ferry service was operated by the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad and previously by the Hoboken Ferry Company. Unstated on the poster is the fact that the ferries were an unprofitable business due to declining usage and revenues primarily due to growing automobile and bus usage by commuters and travelers. The new (1950) Port Authority Bus Terminal at the Lincoln Tunnel also had an impact along with expectation that the third tube for the Lincoln Tunnel that was under construction that would soon be taking even more business away from the railroad and its ferries.
