United States Navy Jack (flag or ensign), 38 star, in use July 4, 1877 – July 3, 1890. From the E.A. Stevens Post 104, Grand Army of the Republic, Hoboken; formerly property of Fergus McFadden (see archives 2014.011.0002), U.S. Navy veteran from the Civil War and a senior vice commander of the post.
Loosely woven blue cloth field, 48" high x 58" wide, with white cambric cloth stars sewn across in pattern: 8 x 7 x 8 x 7 x 8. No maker's markings.
Hoist side has white canvas header with four brass grommets. Written on header in red ink (hand appears to be contemporary): E.A. Stevens Naval Post 104 G.A.R.
Apparently used for ceremonies and events by this fraternal military organization.
