Collections Item Detail
Thermometer, industrial, made by Instrument Service Co., Inc., [95 River St.], Hoboken, N.J. N.d., ca. 1940-1960.
Object/Artifact
Industrial thermometer made by Instrument Service Co., Inc., [95 River St.], Hoboken, N.J. No date, circa 1940-1960.
Cast bronze, painted and stamped metal; glass tube with mercury; glass cover. Overall dimensions: 21" high (including 6" thermocouple at bottom to screw thread fitting) x 3" wide x 2" deep.
Temperature scale marked from 30 (numbering starts at 40) to 200 degrees Fahrenheit in two degree increments. Company name is marked on the temperature scale plate beneath the glass cover and did not include the street address; number marked above company name: 341 (stock number?) Stamped serial number on body below glass cover frame: 379326. No other markings from a parts maker or manufacturer.
The 95 River Street address was the Steneck Building, an office building and not an industrial facility, so apparently this was the company office/headquarters with its factory or plant at another location.
The nature of this type of item is difficult to date by appearance; date range is only an estimate, but the company has been found listed in 1940s and 1950s directories that give its Hoboken location.
Type of equipment or process that it was intended for use is not indicated or apparent except for a temperature regime below the boiling point of water.
