Reverse has dust cover and framer's printed label (Span Craft Studios, 37 Front St., Redbank, N.J.) Signed by artist in lower right corner: S D L(?) Date: undated, circa late 1940s-early 1950s. Prior owner: Adriaan P.L. Roggeveen (1890-1957), Director of Operations, Holland America Line, Hoboken. Adriaan P.L Roggeveen Collection. Gift of Robert Roggeveen. The painting depicts the pier area with horse-drawn wagons or carts and no modern motored land vehicles other than railroad tracks. It is apparently a tribute painting and may have been based upon a tryptich of photographs of the same viewpoint taken circa 1910-1915. See notes and reference image with this record. While similarities exist between the photographs and the painting (such as the same railroad cars in the same position), there are major differences. The painting depicts a single stack un-named ocean liner while the photos show the two-funnel Rotterdam. A coal (or grain) elevator barge is seen in the painting near the bow of the ship. There is no elevator in the photographs. Roggeveen, whose office was in this pier building, retired in 1953. This painting may have been a present to him upon his retirement.
