Short Biography The son of Cuban immigrants, Robert Menendez was born In New York City on January 1, 1954. Along with thousands or other Cuban-Americans, the Menendez family eventually settled down in the nation's most densely populated community per square mile-Union City, New Jersey. After graduating high school, Menendez turned down a prestigious scholarship to Colum­bia University in order to pursue his interest In local community activism and urban affairs. He attended St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J. His first political cause was to push for an elected board or education in his hometown. At age 19, Bob started a civic organization and conducted a successful petition drive that led to a public referendum. The effort was so successful, a year later in 1974, Bob became the youngest person ever elected to a School Board In New Jersey, as well as the first Cuban-American elected to any position in New Jersey history. Bob Menendez' remarkable career or "firsts" in New Jersey government service had begun. By 1980, he had earned his law degree from Rutgers University. By 1986, he bucked one of New Jersey's oldest and most powerful political machines and was elected Mayor of Union City-New Jersey's very first Mayor of Hispanic heritage. In November of 1987, Bob Menendez was first elected to the New Jersey State Assembly. In February of 1991, Menendez became New Jersey's first Hispanic State Senator in New Jersey's history. And in November of 1992, Bob Menendez became the very first Hispanic from New Jersey to be elected to the United States House or Representatives to serve the new 13th Congressional District. Bob Menendez is an accomplished urban advocate who has battled to get things done for the over-burdened taxpayers, tenants and low-income families living in our cities. He has sponsored a landmark law that fights racial hate and discrimination. He created a senior citizen job-training program that is a model for the nation. He played a major role in New Jersey's property tax reform and quality or education movement. And he fights for urban job creation, affordable health care and innovative public safety solutions. Today, Congressman Menendez not only represents a major voice for the people or "lorth and Central New Jersey, he is a major voice for urban areas throughout his state and the nation. He has been selected to serve on both the influential Public Works and Transpor­tation Committee and the prestigious Foreign Affairs Committees In Congress, and serves in the leadership position or House Majority Whip-at-Large. Menendez is married to Jane Jacobsen-Menendez, an urban education administrator. The couple have two children, Alicia and Robert, Jr. -- Page 2 -- Greetings For over 70 years, the Hoboken Lions Club has served the community of Hoboken. Our charities have aided the blind, visually handicapped and indigent. As we honor our "Man of the Year", Congressman Robert Menendez with our Charity Ball, our choice has abided by the very principles that Lionism was founded originally. Our motto was adopted as "We Serve" and our "Man of the Year" and the Hoboken Lions Club have lived up to that very motto ... "We help our Fellow Human Beings"!! Our Service organization is comprised of over 38,000 individual clubs in 160 countries with 1.3 million members who quietly take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of their communities. We help our fellow human beings, particularly, the Blind, Homeless, Indigent and Distressed. We hope that you our guests, will enter in the Spirit of Lionism and contribute to your community.
