Object/Artifact
Sun lamp: Uviarc Sunshine Lamp manufactured by the Cooper-Hewitt Electric Company, Hoboken; General Electric Company. No date, probably 1911.
An adjustable floor lamp (as seen, the height is 54" and the head can rotate from vertical as seen to to horizontal) presumably used for tanning or typically in that period, light therapy. No patent numbers found externally on object. Weight is circa 50 pounds with a transformer in the base. Original wiring in poor condition and is not considered operable. Style was probably considered as Gothic.
Used a three contact mercury vapor bulb, metal contacts on 'Y' shaped glass bulb; several ounces of mercury in bulb. When in lamp, bulb was mounted in front of a shaped reflector that directed the light in the direction that the head could rotate. (Bulb is stored separately from the lamp by the museum for safety.)
Cooper-Hewitt was a significant inventor and developer of discharge lamps and mercury vapor lighting products. Cooper-Hewitt operated in Hoboken 1910-1911 and again from 1948-1965 (style of this lamp and wiring suggests the it was made in the earlier period); GE operated here under various names from 1911-1948. Their production was located at 720-732 Grand St. buildings.
