Photograph
Sepia-tone photo captioned "New York from Hoboken." Hoboken, no date, circa 1880.
Photographer not indicated. 6" x 8" wide print mounted on brittle photographer's board (14" wide x 9-3/8" high; probably originally 11" but trimmed to fit modern matte.) Reverse is blank.
With: remnant of original mounting board, ca. 1" high x 3-1/4" wide, with a contemporary ink title "New York from Hoboken" on the front.
The view is looking apparently northeast on what is believed to be Castle Point area (estate of the Stevens family), possibly from about Sixth Street. A man, woman and three children are seen looking towards New York. None are identified. The sign seen between two children is not fully legible; one word appears to be "Hudson." A wood fence runs east-west on the hill. Note telegraph / telephone wire poles are seen below along River Walk.
Print was received in a modern frame with a double window matte. The corner caption fragment was centered in small window below the image window. Modern materials (non-archival) removed and not retained.
