Photograph
Digital image of photo of a Hoboken Playgrounds girls marching unit on Washington St., Hoboken, no date, circa 1938-1940. Original image was ca. 4-1/2" wide x 2-3/4" high. Plus the black-and-white 70 mm nitrate negative of the same size as the print thus the print is possibly a contact print. Photographer not indicated (print made by the People's Studio.) Reverse has ink stamped processor's number: 29; also pencil notation "Not clear." People are not identified.
The parade was probably the Decoration (Memorial) Day parade in late May. One of the two women in the foreground is probably Marion Kennedy, the girl's playground program director under Julius Durstewitz.
In the right background, one of the business signs is for L. & G. Laikin, Electric Lighting Fixtures Supplies which was at 526 Washington St. This places the parade group in the 500 block of Washington St. marching north. The view is looking southwest. cf. photo catalog 2005.078.0539, .0540, .0541 for other views of marching units in the same location. From the variations in lighting, group arrangement, dress, individuals and parked cars, it appears that this group of images, .0538 to .0541, show parades from different years.
