This item was displayed in the 1997 museum exhibition: United Decorating Co., 1899-1997. "Decorations for All Occasions." 98 Years of Parades, Funerals, Grand Openings, & Masquerade Balls. (The founder of the firm was Robert Kirchgessner, a German immigrant.) Details about this item as captioned are no longer available.
Noteworthy is the contination of apparent German cultural activity in Hudson County even though the United States had declared war on April 6, 1917. Hoboken was to become the U.S. Army Port of Embarkation. Depicted is the American patriotic symbol of an eagle and shield at the left and a Germanic element at the right.
