Notes: THE JERSEY JOURNAL, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1980 Anne Carey, 72, Hoboken teacher, world traveler A retired Hoboken school teacher, Anne Carey, 72, a lifelong resident of the city who spent much of her life traveling to various parts of the world, died yesterday at St. Mary Hospital, Hoboken. Miss Carey, who was appointed to the Hoboken school system in 1929, taught social studies until her retirement in 1968. It was on her graduation from the College of St. Elizabeth that she began the first of her journeys that were to be an important part of her life. Her family treated her to a world cruise. For the first four years of her teaching career she was assigned to the Joseph F. Brandt School. The remaining 35 years were spent at Demarest High School and later at the Hoboken Senior High School, teaching history. She was active in the old Hoboken Teachers Association and served as its president. She also headed the Hoboken School Employees Federal Credit Union and chaired various committees of the New. Jersey Education Association during her career. In addition to receiving her bachelor's degree from St. Elizabeth's, she took graduate courses at both Seton Hall University and Stevens Institute of Technology. Her travels took her to most of the United States and to many European countries. She attended the audiences of several popes and returned to Rome, Paris and London several times. Students said her first-hand knowledge of other nations made her history classes more interesting. Several weeks ago she realized a longtime ambition when she visited the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal. She made the trip with a group of retired teachers and liked the country so much she told friends she'd like to make a return visit. In addition to world travel, she made local bus trips with Hoboken senior citizens and often visited them at the Multi-Service Center. "She was an unofficial Hoboken ambassador to the rest of New Jersey and the world," said one school official. Her funeral will take place Saturday from the Bosworth Funeral Home, Hoboken. A mass will be offered at 10:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Church and burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City. Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2009-05-31
