Wall plaque from Bethlehem Steel Shipyard commemorating retirement of Benny J. Fernandez, father of donor Ben Fernandez.
Object/Artifact
Wall plaque from the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken commemorating the retirement of Benny J. Fernandez, father of donor Ben Fernandez. Fernandez senior worked at the shipyard from 1941 to 1983, his last position was that of riggers crane operator. His son also worked at the same site.
The plaque was made in the shipyard shops. Made of a hardwood with a molded edge, it has a 10" x 3" bronze plate attached with face screws. The legend reads: Bethlehem Steel Co. | Shipbuilding. Division. | Hoboken. Yard. | U.S.A. Above the bronze plate is an embossed metal plate (probably aluminum) that has his employee information: 65 144 [employee identification number, the first 2 digits are the department number] | Benny J Fernandez | 1941 - 1983 | Riggers Crane Op[erator]. This plate has a yellowed film that is lifting at the edges (it was probably not intended to left on permanently, but to be removed after manufacture.)
