Table of Settings for Universal Proportional Dividers. Registered, 1893, by Keuffel & Esser Co., New York. Copyright 1897. Issued circa 1897-1915. Printed cardstock, 4 panels 1-5/16" high x 5-1/2" wide, mounted on linen backing; folds to 1-5/16" x 5-1/2".
This divider, model 440 or 442, was offered from at least 1893 until World War II although a version of it was offered after that without the name "Universal." As decribed in the catalog, it was in a wood case (later ones were morocco leather) with a "table of settings." Thus the reason for the folded item. An expensive tool and likely to be well cared for, thus the case and the substantial work that went into making the reference tables an item that would last with repeated use.
It is difficult to date this printed item except that the linen hinging method probably places it in this date range even though this named model was offered up to World War II.
K+E main office (after 1907) and factories were in Hoboken.

Notes: There was a period when the divider was not available due to a supply disruption because of World War I, 1914-1918. As late as April 1920, the price list had the stock numbers, but they were not priced, indicating it was not available. It did appear in later catalogs and price lists.
