Photograph
Sepia-tone photo of the S.S. Bremen and S.S. Main in Weehawken Cove after the Hoboken pier fire, ca. June 30, 1900.
2-3/8" high x 4" wide print on photographer's mount. Photographer was an H. Bremer [Harry A. Bremer] as identified in contemporary pencil on reverse along with his address, 153 Webster Av., J.C.[Jersey City.]
Also inscribed on the reverse in pencil: Hoboken Pier Fire | 2 boats up the Hudson | River.
View was taken from the Hudson River and is probably looking west - southwest. The tugboat at the left is from the Pennsylvannia Railroad fleet. Note several small rowboats on the scene.
The two vessels of the North German Lloyd Line ocean liner fleet were engulfed in the great pier fire in Hoboken that started on June 30, 1900. They were towed north from Hoboken to the Cove (also known as the Weehawken Flats) where they sank in the shallows (Hoboken's city line meets Weehawken in the middle of the Cove.) How close to the actual dates of the fire this was taken is not known. The derrick barge suggests that salvage operations had started. Both were eventually refloated and returned to service.
