Photograph
Sepia tone photo of shipyard workers posed on deck with guns of unidentified naval vessel (probably the U.S.S. Georgia) at Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine. No date, circa 1905-1906. 6" x 8" wide printed on photographer's mount, formerly 10" x 12", most now lost. Photographer is not indicated here, but was likely "Harden" of Rockland, Me as found on a similar photograph (photo catalog 2007.075.0002.) Reverse is blank.
The Hoboken donor stated that two of her relatives are in the group photo. They worked at this yard and later at Hoboken shipyard facilities. They were William Sankowsky, her grandfather on her mother's side, and her uncle, Ferdinand Sankowsky. They are not individually noted in this photo but are identified by her in photo catalog 2007.075.0004.
The layout of the guns appears to correspond with the view of the U.S.S. Georgia which is seen in photo 2007.075.0004. It was built at this shipyard; launched October 11,1904 and commissioned September 24, 1906. The view would suggest that the vessel was near completion and thus the date is 1905-1906.
