Print of an engraving titled "New York from Bedlow's Island," New York, no date, ca. 1880. 7" x 10" wide plate on trimmed 9" x 12" sheet mounted on heavyweight chipboard.
Published for the New York Mirror, engraved by James Smithe after a painting by John G. Chapman. Bedlow's (now spelled Bedloe's) Island is at the left and is now called Liberty Island as it is the site of the Statue of Liberty. The island had a fortress on it since at least 1812, but the constructed base at the left appears to be for the Statue of Liberty. Hoboken cannot be directly seen in this view.
