Nickel plated metal, 2" diameter x overall 3/4" thick; glass window for viewing three digit tally. Inscribed on front with company name "Keuffel & Esser Co. N.Y." and "Germany." Name of item and model number not found on object.
With: original two-piece box (stapled corners) with printed paper label on lid; printed paper insert (2-1/2" square) with depiction of how to hold machine in use with text in English where it is called a "Tallying Register."
Incomplete available reference does not allow for specific dating of this item. It is not shown in an 1892 catalog and ones by 1903 do not use the 'N' which was usually a designation for a 'New' product. (The stock or model number without the 'N' appeared in their catalogs for decades into the 20th century.)
Keuffel & Esser had its main factory in Hoboken during this period, but they did import from Europe a number of products that they sold such as this one. K&E employed a number of vendors, but they also had their own facilities in Germany for manufacturing.
