A history with some illustrated catalogs of L. Straus & Sons, an importer of fine china and cut glass articles as well as one of the premier makers of cut glass in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The business was founded by Lazarus Straus and his son, Isidor. Joining later were his other sons, Nathan and Oscar plus son-in-law Lazarus Kohns. With the introduction of their lines into R.H.Macy's Department Store in 1874, the company had such success that by 1896 the Straus family was the sole owner of R.H. Macy's. They became one of America's richest and most powerful families in retailing.
L. Straus & Sons had a factory in Hoboken from May, 1894 until May 20, 1897. The factory was the entire west side of Hudson St. between 12th & 13th St. (It was just across the street from the new Machine Shop of the A.W. Fletcher shipyard. The Washington St. side of the block was 14 tenements.) The factory and tenements were destroyed by fire in 1897 and the site burned for 34 days.
