Archive
Print depicting the S.S. Saale, North German Lloyd Line, on fire at Hoboken, July 1 or 2, 1900. Partial leaf removed from unknown German language publication, publication date also unknown, but probably contemporary, but likely within a few years of this fire. Leaf: 8-1/4" high x 9-1/4" wide.
Captioned in German below image: Der Brand der Bieranlagne des Norddeutschen Lloyds in Hoboken: Der Brand der "Saale". Nach einer photographischen ausnahme. (Mit Text.)
Caption, while untranslated, makes it clear that the image was after a photograph of the scene. Reverse of leaf has double-columned text running the opposite direction from the print indicating that this leaf was probably from a book or magazine rather than a newspaper.
The Saale was released from its Hoboken pier while on fire during this disastrous event. It floated into the main channel of the Hudson where it was towed and allowed to burn out. The view here is northeast with Hoboken at the left. Several tugboats (and lighters) are seen including one named "Maria Hoffmann."
