Photograph
Photo of a the exterior of a fire at 318 Washington St. with firemen in operation and several bystanders, Hoboken, no date, circa week of April 3-10, 1932. 8" x 10" high print. Photograph by Underwood & Underwood, 242 West 55th St., New York; ink stamped block on reverse. Captioned in pencil on reverse: "Hoboken, N.J. | 3 women -4 year old girl rescued." People have not been identified.
The view is north looking at the facade of 318 Washington. Optician Harold Sugarman was on the second floor; the name of the first floor business which advertised Victor Radios, Radio Electrolas and Victrolas has not been established. Solomon's Cloaks & Dresses (Henrietta Solomon, proprietor), 316 Washington St., is to the south (left). Hoboken Fire Department firemen have several hoses and ladders in use. Smoke is rising from the basement. Note in the smoke near the fireman on the ladder is a large vertical sign "Eyes Examined."
Corners show remains of a previous album mount. Per donor: source stated that this was from an album that had materials dated 1929-1932. Dated here as 1932 from that information and from the sign in Solomon's window at the left with April 3 and April 10 for Merchant's Exposition of The Hoboken Businessmen's Association. Based on April 3 being a Sunday as the typical start of a such a weeklong event and April 10, a Saturday, for its ending, the year would be 1932.
