Notes: The company based in Hoboken was primarily the maker of Davis Baking Powder which is listed in the ingredients for one recipe. It also had been making Cocomalt, an enriched malted chocolate drink in powder form for over 20 years. Swel probably seemed to a natural extension and good fit for the company to extend its product lines. An enlarged detail of a can on the cover shows that the top say's "Cocomalt" and at the right is the outline of two cans (see below.) See objects 2010.007.0270 for a can labeled 'Swel for making Fudge or Frosting' issued by Davis probably 1950-1955. Besides the combined use for fudge or frosting, the lithographed metal can has a more 'modern' style. By the later part of that decade, the company became part of Penick & Ford who used their name on the product. The top of this can is printed with promotional text for Cocomalt and Davis Baking Powder including depictions of their cans. Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2010-11-04
