Photograph
Black-and-white or sepia-tone photos, six, of a crime scene at 218 River Street and Pier No. 3, Hoboken, July 12 & 18, 1936.
8" x 10" wide prints. Photos taken by R. Magnus, Photographer, Hoboken, N.J. (indicated in typewritten text on back as "R.Ms.") Reverse of all have typewritten image number, description, date and photographer.
Documentation photos for criminal investigation by the Hoboken Police Dept. These photos are the only ones present from a series of at least fourteen photographs (the highest numbered being #14) and related to a crime, the victim being a John Dunlap, at or near 218 River St. and the Pier No. 3 headhouse, Hoboken in July 1936. Nature of crime which was apparently violent (blood appears to be on ground in photo 1) is not stated and has not been researched. (This photo is from an accession group that consists of photographs from Hoboken Police Department records. Discarded in the 1990s when the department moved from Hoboken City Hall to its new headquarters on Hudson St. They are the only photos of the accession that have a specific or indicated relationship to a crime or law enforcement activity.)
These crime scene photos are very good quality and reveal a significant amount of detail about this small section of River Street between Second and Third Streets plus the Pier No. 3 headhouse and River Street entry gates. All of these building were demolished long ago. There is no street activity; five of the six are dated July 12, 1936 which was a Sunday and the only people seen are in upper windows in photo 4. The only photo (last one) is dated July 18th which would have been a Saturday and it shows no activity like the other 3 photos in the Pier 3 area.
Photo 1:
#9. View of side walk and front of saloon at 218 River St. where John Dunlap layed [sic - laid] after the shooting. 7/12/36 R.Ms.
This view is northwest of the west side of the street. Seen is the Crows Nest saloon at No. 218 that was related to this criminal investigation. South of it at 216 is the U.S. Barber Shop with the distinctive barber's pole in front of it. The trash or garbage can is marked for "218 River St. Hob" indicating that such containers might be absconded with unless well marked, not unlike the present day.
Steneck sign is seen at right (and other photos) for its ticket (steamship) and travel agency business at 77 River St. Above the Steneck billboard (which is fronting what appears to be a vacant building lot) is a ghost sign - a painted sign that has worn away. The word 'Ticket" is seen as well an address, 222 River [St.]

Photo 4:
#12. View taken from the pier property showing the entrance to saloon of Edward Leahy at 218 River St. 7/12/46 R.Ms.
View is west through the open south gate. Note people in upper floor windows at 214 River St.
Photo 5:
#13. View of the inside of pier property. 7/12/36 R.Ms.
View is east of the west facade of the Pier No. 3 headhouse with a Red Star Line sign.
Photo 6:
#14. View of the Pier Entrance 7/18/36 R.ms.
A closer view of the same scene as Photo 5, #13. The only difference is the car seen at the right in Photo 5 is not present. Whether this image was simply misdated or a closer photo was indeed taken six days later than the others present, it shows no difference than the one auto; it may have simply moved between setting up of shots. The other car seen is in the same place in both photos.
One thing that both photos 5 and 6 share are "wet paint" signs on the steel column under "Red". Photo 3 also has a "wet paint" sign on a column at the River St. main entrance.
