DescriptionThree lettered windowpanes from the second floor windows at United Decorating Company, 421 Washington St., Hoboken, no date, ca. 1910-1930. Wood framed transom windows from a bay window on the second floor costume department. Removed during renovations in the Spring of 2003. The center window is lettered: "United Decorating Co."; 8" high block letters on the interior side of the glass, white with a gilt outline. Centered below in 2" high gold lettering (appearing to have been added later in a shaky hand) is "INC". All lettering is opaqued on the reverse. They have a ca. 3/8" wide gold border frame about 1-1/2 to 1-/3/4" from the edge of the glass.This was a fixed window 78-1/2" wide x 27" high with a brown painted exterior and (now) very soiled white or off-white interior paint. The two side windows are both lettered "Costumes" in the same manner, but with 7" high letters. These windows have side pivot hardware plus a latch at the top and could be opened. They are 27" high x 41-1/2" wide with the same paint. All lettering and paint are in poor condition with loss of most of the gilt. The original date of construction of the building and these windows is not indicated. The windows did not exist as of 1905 as seen in a dated photo.
