Published photo of Hoboken Girl Scouts marching unit in 1997(?) Saint Patrick's Day parade, Hoboken. Photocopied image, black-and-white,with clipped caption at bottom; presumed to have been published in weekly newspaper, The Hoboken Reporter, mid-March 1997? [Typically Hoboken's parade for this holiday was held on a Saturday about two weeks before March 17th official date.]
View of the unit is north of the women and girls on Washington St. south of Eleventh St. The girl in the right foreground, holding one end of the banner, is Alyssa Corea, as identified by donor Linda Corea. Other people are not identified.
The banner, "Save Our Girl Scout House", refers to the Hoboken Girl Scouts' campaign to save the Scout house at 916A Garden Street from being purchased and demolished for construction of a robotic parking garage.
The captions reads: THIS LAND IS OUR LAND - The Hoboken Girl Scouts carried banners at the St. Patrick's Day parade two weeks ago to protest the possible cession of their scout house to the city so that a parking garage can be built on the property. The [Hoboken] Parking Authority agreed Thursday that they would buy the property only if the scouts were given the option of staying.
[The property was purchased in April 1997 and the house was demolished; garage built without an accomodation for the scouts.]
