Sepia tone photos, 2, of Hudson St.; from Newark St. to Ferry St.; Hudson to Washington Sts., Hoboken, n.d., (1933.)
Photograph
Sepia tone photos, four, of a store at 200 Washington Street, Hoboken, November 26, 1930.
8" x 10" wide prints. Photographs taken by R. Magnus (credit emboss at lower right); black ink on print with date: Reverse of all have modern (ballpoint) ink stating: 200 Washington St. or 2nd & Washington.
While the location was once a fruit and vegetable store (green grocer) as stated on the awning, it was no longer used for that. (It may have been at an earlier time a cigar / tobacco shop that was part of the large United Cigar Stores Co. chain; there was once a listing at 212 Washington Street for a United Cigar Stores Co., but none has been found listed for 200.)
Photo 1: view west of storefront on Washington at the corner, looking west. Merchandise and signs are seen in the windows. To the right is a window with clothes displayed and Dress Sale sign. This is probably F.W. Woolworth which had one of its five-and-dime department stores at 202-206 Washington Street (according to 1926 Polk Directory; Hopkins 1923 Atlas labels 200-206 as Woolworth's.)
Looking at the left side, there are streetcar tracks seen in the cobblestone paved street (also seen in photo 3.)
Photo 2: view of the Second Street side with merchanise in window; an old lettered window awning is open: Schaff's Fruit & Vegetable Market.
A detailed painted sign is at the right for a business whose name is not seen. Many store locations are given including some that were out-of-state like Detroit, Pittsburg, Wilkes-Barre, New Bedford, Mass. Sign was painted on building before the fire escape was installed. (The other end of this sign seen in photo 3 includes this address, 200 Washington St., Hoboken.)
Photo 3: view farther west on Second Street to two bay (or oriel) windows; view is northeast; merchandise is seen in both windows; one at the left has floor lamps and table lamps; right has only table lamps (boudoir, cafe, etc.) viewable in upper panes (lower large pane is opaqued.) At the right of the west window is a door that has no steps to it; loading dock?
The other end of the painted sign seen in photo 2 is seen.
Photo 3, detail right: the west section of the painted sign with this address, 200 Washington St., Hoboken, shown among many locations, some out-of-state.
Photo 4: a closer view of a Second Street window (one closer to Washington St.); merchandise is small lamps.
Numerous chalk marks are seen on the facade (below windows) and these may have been what the photographs were used to document as part of a criminal investigation. This photo is from an accession group that consists of photographs from Hoboken Police Department records. Discarded in the 1990s, the original documentary purpose of this photo is not stated or apparent.
