Sepia-tone photo of a float of the B.P.O.E, Hoboken Lodge No. 74 on street, location unknown, n.d., ca. 1931-1936.
Photograph
Sepia-tone photo of a float of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Hoboken Lodge No. 74 on a street, location not given, no date, circa 1931-1936.
8" x 10" wide print. Photographer not indicated. Reverse is blank.
View is of a left side of a float in the shape of a battleship with extensive lettering about the Elks and Hoboken. This float was probably part of state convention activities for the Elks which were not held in Hoboken. Note the tree foliage which makes it a warm weather month and likely a summer one, when such conventions were held.
Whether this float made any appearance in Hoboken has not been established. (If this photo was in Hoboken, then the building in the background would have to have been one on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology; and if in Hoboken, then it may have been part of Memorial or Decoration day events.)
The early date is based on the 1929-1930 date seen on the float and the late one by that fact that there is no mention of Arthur Scheffler of Hoboken Lodge No. 74 who was President of the state organization in 1936-1937. He would likely have been honored on it in some way.
The front (or bow) end is at the left; lettering on hull from front to back:
