Photograph
Sepia-tone photo of two boys formally dressed; holding candlesticks, rosaries and catechisms, Hoboken, no date, circa 1900-1910.
3-13/16" wide x 5-1/2" high print on 6" x 9" photographer's mount. Photograph taken by W. [William] Manewal, 520 Washington St., Hoboken, N.J. (imprint on mount in lower border.) Reverse is blank. The children are not identified.
The photo was probably a portrait to commemorate their first communion. The boys appear to be about 10 years old (first holy communion in this period seems variable with an age range of seven to twelve years old or later.) Both have boutonierres. The painted backdrop depicts a church interior; a carved wood bookcase is at the left.
The qualities of the photo suggests that it was taken in Manewal's studio rather than inside a church with a backdrop.
