Sepia-tone photo of Duke's House; Hudson Place, Hoboken , n.d. ca. 1902-04.
Photograph
Sepia-tone photo of Duke's House and the Hudson Place, Hoboken , no date, circa 1902-1904.
5" x 7" wide single weight print. Photographer not indicated, but it may have been Ernst Walter. Reverse has modern pencil script: The Duke's House.
This building burned down in the August 1905 Lackawanna Terminal fire and was rebuilt, in a less grand style, on the same site.
Detail 1, left: at left is 12-14 Hudson Place, Trust Company of N.J., a bank which was built in 1896; to the right at 8 Hudson Place is J. & W. Cahill Co., coffee importers, retailers and wholesalers.
U.S. flag on pole atop bank building is 45 star pattern (1896-1905.)
Detail 2, left of center: Empire Theatre poster on the side of Duke's House with September 4 ("Sep 4") date at the end of a line; if September 4th was a Saturday, the typical end of a playing week, it would have dated this photo as 1899 except that according to Hans' History of Theatre the Empire was not erected until 1902. (And since this scene did not exist in September 1905, the photo is approximately dated as 1902-1904.)
Detail 3, center: push cart food peddler; his signage is not legible
Detail 4, center, Duke's House saloon entrance on the east end of the building.
Detail 5, right: Superintendent's House with gate of Hamburg American Line (both of these are located on Hopkins 1909 map plate 1; note shoe shine stand under awning at north end of Duke's House.
