Brochure: New York to Europe on U.S. Government Ships. United States Lines. Operators for U.S. Shipping Board. Issued circa September 1921. Printed booklet, 9" high x 8" wide folded to 4" wide. Color cover, [16] pp., photo illustrated, route map. (n.b. cover is considered as page [16] which is typical of the pagination for this publication format.) This travel brochure is an important document from the first year that this line was in operation. Page [15] has "Minimum Rates, Effective September 1, 1921." Hoboken is not mentioned, but the line sailed from Pier 1 in Hoboken when it began scheduled sailings (see archives 2012.001.0011 for United States Lines, Sailing List No. 4, Nov. 26, 1921.) Most of the brochure is devoted to the amenities of the S.S. George Washington and S.S. America. Photographs, interior and exterior including deck activities, illustrate these descriptions. The centerspread is cabin plans of B and C decks on the George Washington. Other vessels mentioned: S.S. Potomac S.S. Princess Matoika S.S. Hudson S.S. Panhandle State S.S. Centennial State [The six below do not show up in Sailing List No. 4, Nov. 26, 1921.] S.S. Old North State S.S. Susquehanna [The four below are not listed on a scheduled route in this brochure.] S.S. Agamemnon S.S. Mount Vernon S.S. President Grant S.S. Pocahontas Notable is that the minimum rates are slightly different than those published in United States Lines, Sailing List No. 4, Nov. 26, 1921 (archives 2012.001.0011.) The United States Lines was based in New York at 45 Broadway, but sailed from Hoboken after World War I. It was created in 1921 from assets of a different, previous line. Due to the economic climate, it received large government subsidies overseen by the U.S. Shipping Board. These subsidies or incentives were necessary for the disposal, sale and return to service of the large fleet of ocean liners or passenger ships that had been converted for use as troop transport ships during World War I (many had been confiscated German vessels used for troop transportation.) The piers at Hoboken were owned by the federal government controlled by the U.S. Maritime Commission due to their previous use as the U.S. Army Port of Embarkation and later, Debarkation.
