Pass, transportation: Handwritten pass for a Mr. R. Smith and Wife for travel from Hoboken to Buffalo and return, issued by A[ndrew]. Reasoner, Superintendent, Morris & Essex Division, Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, Hoboken, Nov. 3, 1886. Printed lined note paper, partial sheet 4" high x 5-1/2" wide with holographic entries; inkstamp validation with date; 3 different conductors' punches. Creased, soiled.
An example of how free passage was allowed by this informal method as a written note to conductors rather than a more formal printed pass, usually being a form on paper or card.
