I especially look forward to May when I have an opportunity to publicly acknowledge and recognize the dedicated and faithful long-time St. Mary employees at what has become an enjoyable tradition at St. Mary Hospital — the annual Awards Luncheon. May also is the month for the premier fund raising activity at St. Mary — the Charity Ball. This event has taken on added importance over the past few years, for while the hospital has experienced the impact of an ever increasing number of regulatory agencies, new medical equipment that might not otherwise be obtain- able has been purchased with the help of the monies generated by the Charity Ball. We are indebted to the many members of the hospital staff and the Hudson and Hoboken community who helped make the Charity Ball a success. To all of you honored in this issue, long time employees and Charity Ball Committee members - a big THANK YOU. I would also like to mention my gratitude to the Hoboken community, especially the wonderful Ambulance Squad, and the Hoboken Police and Fire Departments, for the outstanding job they did in the recent city-wide disaster drill, in conjunction with our hospital employees, our dedicated nurses and physicians and employees from several departments. [end page 2] [page 3] Disaster Drill Pictured here is a "disaster victim" being transferred to a hospital stretcher from an ambulance squad stretcher during the simulated city-wide disaster drill held on April 28th. The cooperative nature of this venture sponsored by the hospital is well illustrated here as members of the hospital's Security Department, the Maintenance Department, and the Housekeeping Department work in conjunction with a member of the Hoboken Ambulance Squad. [plus uncaptioned photo.] [three more labeled group photos of award honorees: 10 years (2 different); 5 years] [end page 3] [page 4] One Enchanted Evening Charity Ball - - - Sister Grace Frances Strauber, President of St. Mary Hospital, in addressing the more than 300 guests at the St. Mary Charity Ball on May 9, 1981, announced that the proceeds from the Ball would be used to purchase much needed microsurgery equipment. This year's Ball was held at the Tavern on the Green in New York City with the theme, "One Enchanted Evening." The elegance of this, the 78th St. Mary Charity Ball, was enjoyed by all.
