Photograph
Black-and-white photographic negatives, two, of Fabian Theatre signage for "On the Waterfront", "Filmed in Hoboken", corner of Newark & Washington Streets, Hoboken, January to early February, 1955.
2-1/4" x 3-1/4" negatives. Photographer not indicated, but likely Mel Kiernan of Hoboken.
Both views have signs noting the film was made in Hoboken. It was an offering of a double feature ("2 Big Hits") of "On the Waterfront" (released NY, July 28, 1954; LA, Aug. 6) and "The Member of the Wedding" (released Dec. 30, 1952), so neither film was first run.
Dating established from text in both images about "On the Waterfront" winning three awards from the New York Film Critics Circle. These awards were made on Dec. 28, 1954 and the lack of any mention of Academy Award (Oscars) nominations, which would have been announced on Feb. 12, 1955, means this run was probably in January to mid-February 1955. Cold weather outwear worn by the few people in the scene along with slushy snow on the street.
1. View is south of the Newark St. theatre facade with an oblique view of the Washington St. marquee and the east side of Washington to Observer Highway.
The marquee has a painted banner for just "On the Waterfront":
Filmed in Hoboken
'On the Waterfront'
Jersey's won Tony Galento - Lee J. Cobb - Karl Malden - Eva Marie Saint
Winner of 3 N.Y. Critics Awards - Best Picture - Best Actor (Marlon Brando) - Best Director (Elia Kazan)
To the right of the banner is a smaller sign card: Marlon Brando. Next to it is a cut-out portrait of Brando (image of him as Terry Malloy used in some posters).
To the left is the standard marquee lettering of the other half of the double bill.
On the Washington Street marquee is the standard display lettering for only "On the Waterfront"
2. A corner marquee case (facing Washington St.) with poster for the movie with painted banner across bottom with the three awards form the N.Y. Film Critics. Above case is a small painted banner: Filmed in Hoboken.
