Sepia-tone group photo of the class 1876 of the Martha Institute posing outside the school, Hoboken, 1876. 3-7/8" high x 5-1/16" wide print with oval image on a 4-1/4" x 6-1/2" mount. There are 3 holographic ink notes on the reverse. There is one at the top that is faded, water-damaged and partially overwritten: 1st Class of Martha -. It is overwritten with: Class of 1876 - Martha Institute. At the left running vertically is: A. Burfeind | 709 Bloomfield St. (in the old street number system.) The last two inscriptions appear to be the same ink and hand. None of the ten girls and women are identified.
The Martha Institute was the home of the German Evangelical Church's parochial school at this time. Located at Park Ave. (originally Meadow St.) and Sixth St., it was used for Sunday school, by other churches and for a time as Hoboken's high school. From a group of images relating to the German Evangelical Church (Reformed Church of Hoboken also known as the German Lutheran Church,, 6th & Garden Sts.; it is now the Hoboken Community Church.
