Volunteer Relief Certificate, Hoboken, 1861. Unused.
Printed sheet with three uncut blank and un-numbered forms. Sheet circa 15-5/8" high x 12-1/2" wide. Each certificate and stub end would typically be 5 to 5-1/8" high if trimmed. Left side was a stub end to remain in a record book. This sheet show evidence at the left edge that it was cut out of such a book. The final certificate was the right side and would be have been 8-1/4" wide when cut out. See 2013.069.0031 for a cut single blank certificate.
This U.S. Civil War document was intended for the wife or widow of a man enlisted in the Army to be certified for a support allowance or relief. By completing the form for the Committee on Military Relief ( and signed by them as well as the Mayor of Hoboken) the woman would be entitled to receive "Six Dollars per Month, from the State of New Jersey for her support..."
