Object/Artifact
Weight with chain used as temporary hitch for a carriage horse in bridle; used in Hoboken by Kostelecky family, ca. 1900-1920.
Half-sphere 6" diameter weight, cast iron, with number 12 (probably the weight) molded in relief on top with a molded standing ring for attachment. Attached to it is a heavy 2-1/2" diameter ring followed by a 2-1/2" closed S-hook (appears hand forged) which connects to ca. 3-1/2" feet of 1-1/4" x 3/16" welded coil chain. At the end of the chain after a lightweight S-hook is a 3" long dog snap for attachment to a horse bridle.
Although the Kostelecky business of animal carriage making and repair operated earlier than 1900, the dog snap and the welded coil chain would appear to make this a later rather than earlier item.
