Object/Artifact
Workbench, portable, used by the Kostelecky family in their Hoboken carriage making and repair business, no date, ca. 1880-1920. Ca. 36" long x 26" deep x 26" high. Wood and metal.
A hand-made rolling workbench. Top with one lower shelf that extends out along one long side with a rail bored for holding tools. The top has a continuous ca. 1/2" diameter wrought iron rail mounted ca. 3" out from top surface perimeter on three sides. The top is very worn and concave with an added ca. 4" wide strip of sheet metal running the length near the middle.
Four swivel plate casters each having a 1-1/4" diameter metal wheel mounted in cast iron flange and plate typical of the later quarter of the 19th century.
The exact use of this bench is not known, but from its worn condition, it was apparently heavily used in the business.
